Britney’s Gimme More

Friday, August 31st, 2007

It’s killing me that I’m even commenting on Britney’s new song, “Gimme More”, but I feel that I must. Now, I don’t know the details of it (writers, producers, etc), but it just feels like it’s trying too hard to be like, say Timberlake and Timbaland? The beat just rings of Justin’s “Sexy Back” meets, well, every Timbaland song on the radio currently. The chorus, too, reminds me of “Sexy Back” as well — catchy and inviting.

The song, as well as the album, will sell, because it’s Britney. Despite her fuck ups, America loves tradgedy. Even more so, we love rebounds. That fact alone will be the reason why Britney will rebound. But, again, it’s hers to fuck up. Anyways, the song, itself, has everything radio stations like — poppy, catchy, and anyone can sing along. The song will clearly climb up the charts.

The only thing I really dislike about the song is towards the end when the male vocalist says, “the legendary Miss Britney Spears.” Since when was Britney legendary? Madonna is legendary. Britney has some more work cut out for her if she wants to be legendary.

Dear Sean Kingston,

Please stop sampling older songs.  It’s annoying.

Sincerely,

The rest of the world.

DRM Free

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Today we all heard great news.  A major record label, EMI, has agreed to start selling it’s music without DRM.   And if you buy these DRM-free tracks on iTunes, they will also be of higher quality.  Score!

I love the convenience of the iTunes store.  I can always get music whenever I want, burn it to a cd, and go on my way.  But after every purchase, I always had a weird taste of my music.  Sure, the convenience is what made me actually buy a song.  Afterall, downloading songs over and over again illegally is just time consuming.  And half the time, the track is of, for lack of better wording, shitty.  Shitty in terms of the recording process, not the actual music.

Ok, ok, back on topic.  That taste in my mouth?  Well, it was because I knew I didn’t really “own” that track that I just purchased.  You see, I only had limited rights to the track.  I could share it among a few computers, and I could burn it to a cd a few times.  But that was it.  I couldn’t pass it to a friend nor could I play it with a non-Apple music player.

Along with the limited rights came limited song quality.  The tracks you are buying on iTunes are less than CD quality.  Way less than CD quality.  Sure, the iTunes tracks may sound alright to you, but play that track loud and to a bunch of other listerners?  You may expect many to say the song quality sucks.  And the audiophiles in the room?  Well, I’m sure that their panties are in a knot.

So now we get DRM-free music with near CD quality.  We’re still a bit off from that precious CD quality, but it’s an improvement.  The new quality will sure make many happy.

As for pricing of this new format of music, well, prices have been increased — sorta.  Single tracks will be bumped up 30 cents.  Not too bad.  However, album sales will stay the same at $9.99.  Pretty cool if you ask me.

I’ll end this ramble of an entry right….now.
