Veg…what?

I’ve been meat free for almost three weeks or so.  I don’t like to call myself a vegetarian, because I’m not.  Instead, I’m just trying to be a bit more proactive about what I eat and what I don’t eat.  I’m not going to say I will never eat meat again, because honestly, I think that’s a bad approach.  But, again, I’m going to be proactive about what I eat.

When I tell people I’m trying to avoid meat, they often gasp as if it’s something they can’t comprehend.  But I have to be honest, I was once one of those people.  But not anymore.  It’s really not that hard to avoid meat.  You just have to have a different line of thinking.  Instead of thinking, “I can’t make something with meat tonight,” you just have to think, “what kind of veggies can I make tonight?”  And it will all come together.

For one thing, it allows me to explore other foods.

I ordered mahi mahi :gasp: the other night at dinner and really enjoyed it.  I’m anxious to try other fish, too.  And this is coming from someone who has avoided fish and seafood in general, with the exception of shrimp and crabs, for his entire life.

I’ve been trying to cook with a broader range of vegetables, as well.  I’ve included mushrooms in just about everything I’ve eaten.  And I’m looking forward to making a few dishes with eggplant in the coming weeks, too.

We’ll see how this all unfolds.  I haven’t had a huge craving for meat in quite awhile.  I mostly crave it during lunch when I’m in the mood for a good sub, cheesestake, or sandwhich.  But I’ve been pretty good at finding altetnatives to hold me over — soups, veggie wraps, etc.

The Giambino

The Giambino, Jason Giambi, met with the Tampa Bay Rays.  Giambi makes a ton of sense for the Rays.  Hopefully they sign him, so that we Yankee fans can see him 18-19 times a year.

Sunny Tomorrow

Tomorrow is six months since Sunny passed away.

I miss his precious face so incredibly much. Our home isn’t complete without him. I still find myself apologizing to him for what happened. It’s still the only way I know how to cope with him not being around. I’d give anything to have him back.

We’ve been using the fireplace these last few days. Sunny loved the fireplace. He would always sit directly in front of the fire; the light off of the fire would bounce off of his orange fur essentially making him glow. I miss seeing that. I miss the way he enjoyed the fireplace; I miss the way he enjoyed life.

I just got up to get a tissue and decided to check up on Macky. He was laying on the bed with one leg in the air and cleaning his crotch. Looks like we’ll be washing the sheets again. But that’s Macky. And I’m so grateful to have him as a constant reminder of his brother, Sunny. They’re such opposites, but yet so similar. In a way, Sunny is still very much alive through Macky (except when Macky is bad, which is quite often).

We miss you very much, Sunny. There’s not a day that goes by when we’re not thinking about you or talking about one of our many wonderful memories of you. Tell god I said what’s up and tell Santa not go be too hard on Macky this year.

I didn’t know where this entry was going when I started it, and I don’t know how to end it now. I suppose I’ll just end it here.  I leave you with a picture of Sunny.  He’s covered in ash from the fireplace — one of his goofiest moments ever.
